Veronica + Gregory

|

Beebe and I had a wonderful time photographing Veronica & Gregory's wedding. Veronica was stunning! The couple was married at Southern Oaks Plantation. There was concern that it might rain as there were some dark clouds in the sky and the forecast was calling for rain. However it was perfect, I swear there is something magical about weddings at Southern Oaks.
The beautiful flowers were done by Dee with Bella Blooms. We got to work with our friends Terry & Joe from Studio Vieux Carre. |

We love to eat and listen to live music (aren't we in the right place for it!!). We also love to travel and can't wait to start traveling more. We are members of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church here in New Orleans. In the spare time that we have left, we spend it with our 2 year old Yorkie, Pepper.
How We Met
One day, I received a call from my best friend, Eboni. She stated she had a friend (Greg) that was coming to New Orleans to do a surgery residency at Ochsner and he didn't know anyone in New Orleans. She asked me to call him. I said sure.
Greg and I had great phone conversations and agreed to meet up. On our first "date" we watched the movie "Hitched". A couple of weeks went by and Greg called to see if I wanted to go to a Saints' game. I of course said, "Yes." We had an awesome time!! That following Monday was August 29th, 2005, the day Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. I was scheduled to be on call that day so that meant I would be working hurricane duty. Greg was also scheduled to be on call. I've worked hurricane duty before so I was all set for the normal 3 day stay. However, Hurricane Katrina was not a usual hurricane. We were stuck in the hospital together for 8 days. Greg and I spent the next 8 days getting to know each other and bonding. A couple of weeks later Greg told his best friend, “I met a girl and I’m going to marry her.”
The Proposal
Fast forward to February 2007... Greg and I decided to go on a cruise to Costa Maya and Cozumel. We had a wonderful time. On the last night of the cruise, while I was sleeping, Greg woke up at about 2am. As he moved around the cabin, he turned on all of the lights. Now, I thought this was strange. It was the middle of the night! As I turned over to see what was going on, I saw it on my pillow! Greg had placed my engagement ring on my pillow!! He asked me to marry him, and of course, I said, “YES!”

Beebe and Corrine are awesome! I am awestruck at the photographs from the wedding. They captured not only scenes from the wedding but they captured emotions. These are more than photographs. They are snapshots into the feelings and emotions of each individual in the picture. Some of my friends and colleagues that were not able to attend the wedding have cried while watching the pictures. Beebe and Corrine were with me the entire time I was getting ready until the last moment at the reception. They captured every moment. Unlike most weddings that I have attended, they took pictures of the entire bridal party within 10 minutes after the ceremony!! I was able to enjoy my entire reception. The guests didn’t even know we were missing!! I cannot put into words how amazing Beebe and Corrine are. Thanks, guys!
Thoughts About the Day
When you’re getting married, everybody has advice. The best piece of advice I received was “relax and enjoy the day”. Now, some brides will say there is no way to relax when you have all of the details of the wedding to worry about. I am one bride that is truly able to say I was able to enjoy my day!! Southern Oaks literally took care of everything! All I had to do was show up. Dee with Bella Blooms did an amazing job with the flowers – better than anything I had expected. When I arrived at Southern Oaks, I was awestruck at the beautiful colors that popped out before my eyes from all of the floral arrangements. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. As I stood waiting to hop in the carriage, I could hear the beautiful musical arrangements from Harry Hardin and New Orleans Finest musicians. The string quartet was heavenly. As I pulled around in the carriage with my dad and walked down the aisle and saw Greg standing there with the music playing, I felt like I was in a dream. My dream guy was in front of me with my dream wedding!!
Greg and I knew after the ceremony there would be fireworks but as you can see from our expressions in the photographs, we were still captivated. True to their word, Southern Oaks took care of everything!! I truly enjoyed my reception. I danced the entire night!! As I think back on the ceremony and the reception, this was truly the wedding of my dreams. Everything was perfect! I am so thankful to Dee, Beebe and Corrine, and Bobby and the staff at Southern Oaks. As I look over the photographs, I am able to relive those moments and emotions everyday. Thank you so much.

Adrinda + Alix

How you met?
Alix (a.ka. “Dutch”) secretly hates it when I tell (my version) of this story. In the summer of 2002 we were both working at AOL Time Warner in NYC. It was my first job out of college (Alix had been working there for a year and was in the process of interviewing for another job so we almost missed each other!). One day at lunch I was stepping out of an elevator coming from the cafeteria when I heard someone say, “Kelly, is that you?” I turned around and saw this really handsome guy in a (I think) dark blue suit with a big birthmark on the right side of his face. I was intrigued and I swear for a moment it felt like it was only the two of us standing in that crowded elevator bank. I was sure I had never met this guy before but yet he seemed to know my (last) name. He came up to me, apologizing profusely and said his name was Alix Pierre, that he worked in the building, and asked me to please give him a call and he would explain everything. Instead of calling, I looked him up in the employee director to make sure he wasn’t just some random guy from the street. When I saw that everything he said checked out, I emailed him. These are the emails we exchanged (I saved them):
Hi Alix,
I just met you downstairs in the lobby—you called me “Kelly.” I was a little thrown off because Kelly is my surname and it makes me think that maybe you thought I was someone else. Have we met before? Please forgive me if the question is rude—I just don’t remember meeting you and yet you seem to know my name. . .
Adrinda

Adrina, (notice the misspelling!!!!)
I apologize for disturbing you. I kind of put my foot in my mouth when I said your name (surname)—believe me it just slipped out and I was not even aware of it until you turned around (by then it was too late). It’s a bit embarrassing though because we have not officially met and for the record I am not a stalker or anything weird like that.
This is what happened. I saw you walking in the building one morning and you had some dialogue with one of the security guards. I took the liberty to ask the security guard if he knew who you were and he responded by saying that he read the name “Kelly” on your ID card. Sorry about that, I am totally embarrassed now. Oh! Please don’t blame security for this, it was not their fault.
Well, nice to meet you also. How long have you been with Time Inc.?
Alix
We skipped the small talk and went on a lunch date instead. The rest, as they say, is history. (In Dutch’s version of this story, he tells the security guard “I’m going to get that girl” so running into me in the elevator two months later was all part of his master plan.)
The Proposal?
Dutch proposed to me on Friday, February 17th 2006. I had just moved in with him and we’d spent Valentine’s Day that year unloading and unpacking stuff so when he asked me to go to dinner that Friday I thought it was a belated V-Day celebration. We went to a great steakhouse across the street from our apt in East Harlem. Dutch was coming from work so I got there first, and the manager of the restaurant met me and showed me to a table in the corner where there was strawberries and champagne waiting for me. Dutch is not an extremely really romantic guy but he definitely knows how to make a grand gesture, so I wasn’t suspicious when I saw all the bells and whistles he had waiting for me. I just thought he was pulling out all the stops for our third V-Day together, especially since it hasn’t always been my favorite holiday. Dutch showed up at the restaurant about 20 minutes later and we proceeded to get plastered over a long, leisurely, delicious diner. Throughout the dinner, our waiter kept mentioning the great desserts the restaurant had but after dinner I was so full that I was planning to skip the dessert. But I capitulated to the waiter’s gentle insistences and ordered some sort of chocolate cake dish. When it came out and the waiter lowered the plate, it began to register in my head that the dark lump on top of the plate was really a little black jewelry box and inside was the most beautiful, perfect, princess-cut solitaire ring. Dutch got on his knees then (something he’d said he would never do, by the way) and asked me to be his wife in front of the whole restaurant and I tearfully accepted. The rest of the night is a blur. I do remember, however, that the young man sitting next to us who was obviously on a first date with his lady friend, looked visibly perturbed to have had the bad luck to be seated next to us. I am positive he did not get laid that night.
Studio Tran?
It took me forever to find a photographer. It was particularly hard for me because I was doing most of my wedding planning from South Africa and Miami, so I relied a lot on the Internet to screen potential vendors. I got lots of recommendations, but there was no one I found online who I felt met all my criteria for the person I wanted to photograph my wedding: experience photographing brides of color; photojournalistic style; ability to creatively troubleshoot the challenges posed by my outdoor, nighttime wedding.
That is, until I met Beebe. Beebe’s website is a wonderful reflection of who he is as a photographer. I loved that he had photos of other black brides he had shot displayed prominently on his website and I got such a positive vibe from reading his blog. And when I read the praise from some of his past clients I was hooked. I called him and made an appointment to stop by his studio the next time I was in New Orleans and 5 minutes into the meeting I was ready to sign a contract. Throughout the process of planning this wedding I have been stressed out about a lot of things, but never once have I felt any anxiety about my pictures: I know that anything Beebe does will be beautiful.
Thoughts about the day?
So glad it’s over!!! Seriously though, that day was the culmination of an incredible, fun-filled weekend for myself, my fiancé, our family, and our friends and it was everything we wanted it to be and much more. Dutch and I wanted a relaxed, fun wedding and we definitely got that—everyone had a blast!!! Though most of that night was a blur, the sensation of happiness that we felt then, and now, will remain with us for a lifetime. (And just in case we forget, we’ll have Beebe’s incredible photos to remind us!)
